Krill — Antarctic shrimp

Krill — Antarctic shrimp

Krill is plankton crustacea (small crustacean) living in upper water surfaces of ocean temperate and high latitudes of both half-spheres. Species weight is not more than 2 g, dimensions of 10 to 65 mm.

There exists a great variety of krill species which, as a rule, differ from each other just in habitat. Pacific and Atlantic Krill are considered to be the principal industrial species.

Lifespan of the krill makes up of 5 to 7 years. Concentration of krill per one square meter of water may reach up to 30 000 species. According to different assessments, the overall weight of Antarctic krill is of 200 to 500 mln metric tons.

Since 70th of XX century, USSR and Japan started fishing krill in Antarctic waters. Since that time, krill has got the name “Antarctic shrimp”.

Krill value as an item of foodstuff is enhanced by absolute ecological purity; after all, their habitat is Antarctica – the cleanest region on the earth. Krill feed on woods and nannoplankton, i.e. the smallest (less that 0,05 mm) organisms living both in water depths and underwater ice surfaces. This means that krill meat cannot contain any harmful substances.

Krill meat is 100% natural product feed on by penguins, fish, sea birds and whales. Fortunately, natural reserves of krill so large that we, people, can include this gift of the nature in our daily menu.

Krill fishing

Antarctic krill fishing is performed in Antarctic area pursuant to quota amount specified by Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR).

The catch of krill in a gentle, safe and environmentally friendly way is the main requirement of CCAMLR, which our company perfectly observes.

Trawlers catch krill in volumes according to quotas defined by CCAMLR.

Antarctic krill is a species of crustacean. He lives in the waters of the Southern Ocean in huge clusters. The length of the crustacean can reach up to 6cm and a weight of 2g.

Mostly in a cubic meter of water is up to 30 thousand organisms. And it is krill that is one of the key species in the region’s ecosystem. The biomass of the entire species is estimated at 500 million tons.

Krill usually live at a depth of 100–200 meters, although some species also live deeper.

The life span of Antarctic krill is up to 6 years. He feeds on plankton, while he himself is a food for fish, penguins and other species of marine fauna.

Interesting facts on the most mysterious place of the globe - Antarctic.

200 mln years ago Antarctic was the whole entity consisted of South Africa, India, Australia and New Zealand on one continent under the name Gondwana. There was no ice sheet, climate was warn, there were growing trees and it was inhabited by large animals. Current ice sheet was formed on Antarctic just few million years ago.

Antarctic does not belong to neither of countries. Although it is worth saying that some countries (including Australia, Argentina and Great Britain) in due times tried to claim to property over Antarctic, and up to now it has been remaining the area devoid of jurisdiction. In 1959 there was made “Antarctic Treaty” declaring it to be “natural repository intended for peace and science”. This Treaty was signed by 48 countries.

Antarctic is the only continent having no time zones. Scientists live there either by time of their country or by time of their colleagues, providing them with food and outfit.

Notwithstanding that there is neither permanent population nor any government, continent has its own telephone code - +682 as well as access top-level domain – aq and flag – blue screen with white continent.

Daily diet of polar explorers, working at Antarctic stations, includes beer.

Antarctic is not only the coldest place on Earth but the driest. The average precipitation on Antarctic makes up only 10 sm. So-called McMurdo Dry Valleys is a place where combination of cold and dryness attain the absolute. There were no precipitations for over two million years! Surface and climate of this area remind Mars surface, so as a result NASA has been carrying out tests for space program “Viking”.

The most “positive” record of the region belongs to the Antarctic Weddell Sea: it is considered to be the cleanest in the world. What is logically, though: there is no one who can pollute this place. Seawaters are so transparent that all subjects lying at the depth of 80 m may be seen!

Antarctic is the coldest continent in the world. There was fixed the lowest temperature for the whole human history, –89,2 C°.

Flora and fauna of Antarctic can not be called as diverse. There may be found moss, lichen, weeds, fungus, bacteria, and a lot of seals, fur seals and whales on the continent. Cold Antarctic waters are rich on krill and fish. Coasts are inhabited by sea birds and penguins.

Formerly people could get on Antarctic only as a member of expedition. Now it is simple enough, you just need to buy a tour for expeditionary trips.

Krill processing

Krill processing is performed within 3 hours as at moment of fishing thanks to which the product preserves maximum useful properties.

Each trawler has its individual krill processing system and depends on what exactly will be produced.

Therefore, to release the krill meat the shell shall be separated from meat. To facilitate the above process the krill shall be boiled at a temperature of 80 C°, then it shall be delivered to centrifuge where the separation of heavy meat from light shell with entrails is performed.

In addition, there exists aero-peeling method by which separation of shrimp from the shell is performed with “blowing” (strong airflow). However, as any machine processing, such method may damage crustacean integrity. For meat production, the more krill necks are entire the better.

Heat treatment is used to produce our krill meat.
